In The Bag – Jane Cunningham/Beauty Blogger

What products are in your makeup bag right now?

I have literally boxes and boxes of makeup that couldn’t be condensed down to one bag, so I’ve highlighted the typical contents of what I’d take out and about with me. The contents of my makeup bag vary from day to day: I tend to put the things I’ve started the day with into the bag so I can touch up, but there are a few things I am never without!

Because I have lash extensions, I keep a lash brush on me at all times, and because I like to wear black kohl I always carry a couple of cotton buds in case I start to get pools of it in eye corners. And, I never leave the house without Lanolips tinted balm..any colour will do!

List:
Lanolips in Sunshine, Maybelline Superstay 24hr Foundation, Black Diamond Coating (a ‘mascara’ for extensions), Clinique Lower Lash Mascara, Bourjois Kohl & Content in Vert Expressif, Le Metier de Beaute Lipgloss in Café Crème, a kabuki brush, UD Eyeshadow Primer Potion, cotton buds (pinched from a hotel!), a Thalgo Les Infusions de Bio Digestive Teabag (for late nights when I can’t have any more coffee!), Le Metier de Beaute Eyeshadow in Spicy, Chanel Ombre Essential in Fauve, L’Oreal Color Infallible in Purple Obsession, La Ligne de Chanel in Noir/Lame, Pristige Total Intensity Eyeliner in Black and Nars Blush in Orgasm.

Why do you use those particular products, and do you have a philosophy or routine?

I tend to stick to neutrals as a base and then use an intense liner to add colour to the eye. That said, I like to do my lids very dark – navy or khaki – with very dark lashes and kohl so if you start to pile on bright lips it all looks a bit much. I generally keep my lips quite neutral and very rarely use lipstick; I much prefer gloss or balm. I’m happy to try new looks but I do have a ‘fall-back’ face that I’m really comfortable with and more often than not, I just stay with that.

How often do you change what’s in your makeup bag?

I change it alllll the time! I’m lucky enough to be sent lots of different and new products, so I try to incorporate them into my routine so I can give them a proper test.

Is there a product you can’t live without and regularly re-buy?

Once again

I’m lucky in that I don’t have to buy much at all, but the things I have most recently spent money on are Lanolips balms and La Ligne de Chanel because I can’t bear the thought of running out of either!

Whats the story behind the bag you use? Where did you get it and why do you like it?

The makeup bag I use was sent to me by the Chanel press office (that’s unusual I might add!). It’s a black toweling square with a patent double C. I’m Chanel obsessed so it couldn’t have been a better gift and I did actually scream when it arrived in the post!

Double cleansing mistakes with @drhauschka.ie ☝️
Get 20% off #DrHauschka at @mccauleypharmacy.

Mistake 1. Not using a balm/oil cleanser. Oil attracts oil, so your oil cleanser will break down makeup / SPF and remove oil-based impurities from your skin. It’s REALLY IMPORTANT to follow an oil/balm with a milk or water-based cleaner. That oil needs to be properly removed otherwise it will cause breakouts and texture.

Mistake 2. Not cleansing for long enough. 45 seconds to a minute PER CLEANSE is essential to make sure you’ve actually cleansed properly.

Mistake 3. Not washing/changing your face cloth/mitt frequently. Change it every couple of days.

Bonus tip. Use a dedicated eye makeup remover if you have sensitive eyes.

How I create big, textured, tousled hair ☝️ How I create big, textured, tousled hair ☝️

Step 1. Dry shampoo, disperses evenly throughout the hair. I’m using @amika Perk It Up at the moment. Leave it to sit for a minute, then work in with your fingers. And then brush through.

Step 2. A curling wand. I use @instylerireland. Grab big sections and twist away from the face. For bangs, I like to pull forward and down, and then wave away from the face. Leave hair to cool for a minute or two.

Step 3. Texture spray. I’m using @lovekmireland Doo Over here. Lift sections of the hair and spritz underneath. Don’t spritz on top as this will weigh down and mattify the hair. Do this evenly throughout your hair, and then work in with your fingers.

Step 4. Root lift. I only ever use @oribe Dry Texturising Spray for this. I’ve never found anything as good as it. Again, lift up sections of hair (but only at the root), and spritz underneath. Do this evenly.m throughout - about three sections on each side of the head. Then spend a good minute working in with your fingers.

And there you have it. Big textured, tousled hair 👋

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and National Su May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and National Sunscreen Day is on May 27th, so let’s talk about sunscreen 🧴

☀️ Wearing sunscreen every day is the single best thing you can do for your skin. It’s the BEST anti-aging ingredient on the market.

☀️ Broad spectrum sunscreen reduces your chances of sunburn, of developing fine lines and wrinkles and pigmentation. It also gives your skin the opportunity to repair itself from damage that has previously occurred.

☀️ The way to get the stated SPF protection level on the bottle is by applying two milligrams of sunscreen per centimeter squared. That’s a solid amount of sunscreen. Make sure you’re applying a good dollop; a handful; at least a two finger amount.

☀️ Apply liberally to your face, neck, chest, backs of your hands and your ears (and any other exposed skin!).

☀️ Always use a standalone SPF. Using moisturiser or foundation with SPF is no good. The amount you put on your face will not give you sufficient coverage.

☀️ There are so many great sunscreens on the market, but the best one for you is the one you’ll actually use every day. Find one you love, one that feels good on your skin and works well under makeup, and stick with it.

Did you know Ruby Woo was created by accident? 💋
The MAC team attempted to tweak the formula of Russian Red (another classic) and Ruby Woo was the result. It was launched in 1999 as part of a new lipstick collection called Retro Matte and has been a bestseller ever since!
One of my all-time favourite, forever and ever lipsticks 💄
