Quick guide to retinoids ☝️ Retinol, Retinal Quick guide to retinoids ☝️

Retinol, Retinal (Retinaldehyde), Retinyl Esters and Tretinoin are all types of Vitamin A - often referred to as retinoids.

Think of “retinoid” as the family name, and within that family, you’ve got all the different members.

The main difference between them comes down to strength and how quickly they work. How quickly they work is directly tied to how irritating they might be to your skin.

🌶️ Retinal Esters (Palmitate, Linoleate, etc.)
Mildest, least irritating, least potent.

🌶️ 🌶️ Retinol (Available in different %)
Popular, widely available, generally well tolerated. Can be a bit irritating, especially at higher percentages.

🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ Retinaldehyde (different %)
Most potent retinoid you can get without a prescription. Works 11 times faster than retinol. Can be irritating.

🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ Tretinoin
Prescription-strength retinoid, only available through a dermatologist or GP. Works super fast. Most likely to cause irritation.

The best retinoid for you depends on your sensitivity levels, budget, how quickly you want results and how much irritation you’re happy to put up with (or not).

Regardless, introduce slowly. 2-3 times a week, at night, on dry skin, after cleansing.

On the nights you’re not using a retinoid, double up on repairing, hydrating products to help counteract irritation.
