Looking for something?

I lost my heart in Budapest

January 24, 2016

As the end of 2015 approached, we decided it was high time that we went on a little city break – somewhere not too far from Dubai (i.e not as far as Ireland) and somewhere that wouldn’t take us all day to get to either, as Charlie has the attention span of, well – a three-year-old. So, hello Budapest!

An airline called Wizz Air flies direct to Budapest from the new airport in Dubai, Al Maktoum International, and the flights were pretty reasonable so we decided that’s where we would go (plus the flight time is only five hours).

I filmed a vlog during our trip, which you can watch here – but I also wanted to write-up a little blog post with the highlights of our trip, and perhaps give you a few suggestions of places to go and where to stay if you find yourself in this beautiful city.

Stay

We parked ourselves at the Corinthia Hotel Budapest for four nights, and let me tell you – it was pretty incredible. Built in 1896, the Hotel is steeped in history, in the most incredible location and probably has the most stunning interior of any hotel I have ever stayed in (you can check out some other snaps I took on Instagram here and here). It manages to maintain that old world vibe of days gone by, and equally – be very chic, modern and comfortable.

The rooms are beautifully appointed, and the friendly room service team deliver bottled water and gourmet chocolates to your room every day. Yes, that’s right – gourmet chocolates are delivered to your door – every day.

The hotel was also great for Charlie, lots of space for him to run around and everyone knew him on a first-name basis by the time we left. When we return to Budapest later this year, we’ll be staying here again because we enjoyed it so much and the location is ideal for exploring the city.

Coffee

Obviously, I hunted down a few specialty coffee venues in the city, because I am a bit obsessed with coffee, so if you’re not into that kind of thing look away now. I probably visited four or five in total, but one really stood out to me – My Little Melbourne. It’s an Aussie concept cafe about 15-20 minutes walk from the Corinthia Hotel. It’s super tiny, with just enough room to order, and a few seats squished into the mezzanine space upstairs.

The coffee was very good, and so was the selection of homemade cookies and brownies. I sank two coffees in record time here, as I was absolutely frozen. They also have My Little Brew Bar next door, a slightly more spacious area that serves up brewed coffee only.

To do

In the five days we were in Budapest, we walked about 40km in total. We walked everywhere. Apart from one morning when we stepped outside, and it was 5 degrees, and we just thought – no. This is not happening right now.

This city is best seen on foot I feel, there’s so much to take in; incredible architecture, beautiful streets, dinky little cafes and restaurants and these fantastic beer stands, where you can get a cup of beer for about 60 cents in Euro. Incredible! We visited Eiffel Square, took a boat tour of the Danube, hopped on a city tour, wandered through the oldest market in the city and hung out in the XI District, probably one of the coolest parts of the city. The best advice I can give you if you ever find yourself in Budapest is to just get out on the streets, go for a wander and see where you end up. Take in the sights, grab a takeaway coffee and stroll around the city. You’ll be amazed at how much you see.

Out of all the city breaks I’ve been on over the years, this was probably one of my favourites. I just loved Budapest. I loved the vibe, the people, the atmosphere – I loved everything.

Polyglutamic Acid from @theinkeylist ❤️ Lots Polyglutamic Acid from @theinkeylist ❤️
Lots of you messaged after I used it in my Stories this morning, asking what it is, and why I like it.
It’s a hydrating serum formulated with 3% Polyglutamic Acid, a humectant that can hold four times more moisture on the skin than Hyaluronic Acid.
I apply it to damp skin, after my Vitamin C serum, and before moisturiser. It’s very lightweight and creamy, and makes my skin feel instantly plump and hydrated.
You can use it with Hyaluronic Acid for extra hydration, and it’s also *amazing* when mixed with foundation - try it and you’ll see what I mean 😉

It’s the smell that gets you. The smell of empti It’s the smell that gets you. The smell of emptiness. The smell of disuse.
Uncomfortable chairs. And an ever-present film of dust. On the furniture. On the ornaments.
A general air of awkwardness. Of discomfort. And really, when you look at it, shame.
A room in a house used only on special days. For special visitors. A place to showcase, to pretend, to present, to prepare. Fine china, and tea sets, and brown bread. And shame.
The room the priest sat in when he came to do the census.
The room my mother sat in to tell people my father was leaving.
The room used for bad days, for bad news, and bad people.
The room played as a trump card in the old Irish game of ‘What Will People Think’.
The game used to hide what’s really happening. The game used to plead ignorance.
The game used to turn a blind eye to abuse, to bad behaviour, to bad decisions.
Because look! We’re in The Good Room! Everything is fine.
And where has it got us? Where are we now, Ireland?
With our secrets, and our pretence, and our war on women and children? A war directed, most mercilessly, from The Good Room. A cast of priests, and nuns, and government leaders, and ‘respectable’ members of the community, ready to take their seats. Ready to drag daughters from homes, babies from arms, and hearts from chests.
For shame, Ireland. For shame. How could we be so unloving? How could we be so cruel? 💔

In other news this is what I wore today.
We went out for an early breakfast, and then spent the (entire) day packing up all the Christmas decorations.
I’m wrecked but *thrilled* as the clutter was starting to get to me 😆
Hope you’re all doing OK ❤️

Festive makeup on the most un-festive day, but we Festive makeup on the most un-festive day, but we made the most of it ✨
Santa thankfully got around the travel ban, so we opened presents, and we FaceTimed, and we sipped coffee; festive tunes tinkling in the background, faces squished to the screen, miss yous and love yous exchanged across 5,000 miles.
And then we went to brunch, just the three of us, and we ate burrata, and discussed dessert, as the sun streamed through the windows, and our phones buzzed with messages from people we love. And Charlie said; ‘it doesn’t really feel like Christmas. But it still feels nice.’
And in the end, as we made our way home, and got ready for afternoon on the couch, I realised it was more than nice. It was wonderful ❤️
What’s your all-time favourite moisturiser? Thi What’s your all-time favourite moisturiser?
This is mine; @avene_uki Hydrance Aqua-Gel. I’ve always been a fan of Avene, but when this came out (two years ago now?) it was love at first slather.
It’s a super lightweight gel-cream and incredibly hydrating (like a big drink of water for your skin), and it also doubles up as a great sleep mask (you can use it as eye cream too!).
I know lots of you have bought this as a result of me constantly harping on about it, so I really hope you love it as much as I do 😂
My only complaint... is that the pot is too small. I fly through it at an alarming rate, so for Christmas I’m asking Santa to put pressure on Avene to make a supersize version 😆

‘But there’s a plug socket in that rock, mom’ said Charlie.
‘Modern technology’ I responded. ‘That’s why there are lights in the cave.’
‘So I could charge my Nintendo there?’ Yes, I said. ‘Woah.’
And then we drank Arabic tea, and listened to a story about the history of the caves, before climbing through a narrow opening into a section that had no light, and for a brief moment in the darkness it felt a little bit magical, until Charlie said; ‘I think I saw a scorpion’.
And then everybody left the cave rather swiftly 😆

Five current favourites 🤍 My every day forever Five current favourites 🤍
My every day forever and ever favourite Tinted Moisturiser; @chanel.beauty Les Beiges.
The new @narsissist Soft Matte Foundation (it’s not that matte FYI, see my shiny-faced review a few posts back for reference).
Nars matching Soft Matte Concealer - an oldie/goodie that’s been around for awhile.
@sculptedbyaimee Brighten Up Concealer. Seriously good coverage, still looks like skin, not cakey or crepey, great staying power. A winner 👌🏼
@tan_luxe The Face Illuminating Self-Tan Drops. I never put tan on my face, so this changed the game for me. I put a few drops in my moisturizer or serum and voila! I am bronzed and glowy. Highly recommend.
